| Spam
is unsolicited commercial email that is flooding the Internet with
many copies of the same message, in an attempt to force the message
on people who would not otherwise choose to receive it. Most spam
is commercial advertising, often for dubious products, get-rich-quick
schemes, or quasi-legal services. Spam can not only be a nuisance,
it can also be quite offensive or obscene, and the quantity of spam
is on the increase.
There are various methods that can be implemented
to reduce the delivery of unsolicited email at both the user and
enterprise levels. Unfortunately, most such techniques, such as
content filtering, are not completely effective. Ironically, the
better spam filters get, the more dangerous false positives become
as when such filters are really good, the user is more likely
to ignore everything the filter catches. For most users, missing
legitimate email is an order of magnitude worse than receiving
spam.
